Just a few weeks ago, I experienced one of those career moments that stays with you forever, my first paid job as a professional SFX makeup artist on $treetz: Director’s Cut, directed by Eddie “Rocky” Rivera.
Even though I’ve spent years building creative skills across different lanes, there was something incredibly validating about stepping onto set in this role. This wasn’t practice. This wasn’t experimenting. This was being trusted to deliver on a real production, with real expectations, and a real vision to bring to life.
Stepping Onto Set
Walking onto set that day was equal parts excitement and nerves. I knew the work. I knew the techniques. But when you’re hired it hits different.
My responsibility wasn’t just about creating effects; it was about supporting the story visually. Every detail had to read on camera, align with the director’s vision, and hold up under lighting and movement. SFX makeup is storytelling, and being part of that process in a professional capacity was incredibly energizing.
Learning in Real Time
That set was a masterclass. I had to move efficiently, adapt quickly, and collaborate seamlessly with the director and crew. I learned how small tweaks can make a big difference on camera and how important it is to stay flexible when things shift—which they always do on set.
But the biggest lesson? I felt completely at home.

Why This Moment Matters
$treetz: Director’s Cut marks a meaningful milestone for me. It confirmed that SFX makeup isn’t just something I enjoy—it’s something I can do professionally and confidently. Getting paid for my work was validating, yes, but the real win was realizing I belonged in that space.
A few weeks later, I’m still reflecting on how much that experience gave me: clarity, confidence, and momentum.
What’s Next
That first paid SFX job didn’t just check a box, it opened a door. And I’m excited to see where it leads next.
Here’s to trusting the process, saying yes to opportunities, and allowing your creative path to expand in ways you didn’t originally plan, but absolutely needed.
